Inspired by the novel by John Buchan and the popular 1935 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, ‘The 39 Steps’ is an affectionate parody of period action thrillers of the 1930s.

Patrick Barlow, who adapted the novel for the stage, said “One of the thrilling things about writing this was the challenge of putting an entire movie on stage, complete with murders, shootings, train chases, plane crashes, heavies in fast cars, villains with little fingers missing, not to mention some of the most classic moments in the history of cinema. There is much opportunity for spoof and satire but it’s also a love story.”
